The GeoTrax Lead Train Set offers all the classic railroad play little boys love. They can become the engineers of their own imaginations with so much to do. Starting at the Easy-Rail Station, the special track area makes it so easy for them to get their RC train lined up on the tracks. Board the engineer figure into the front of the classic steam engine or on the back of the red caboose. Little boys can control the train two ways – push it along or control the action from afar with an easy-to-use RC controller. The controller features forward and reverse controls and train sound effects. Drive the train around the curve, up the hill and to the mountain. Pick up logs to keep the “wood-burning” engine going. Use the crane on top of the mountain to load it all up. The train can make its way down the winding hill and back to the Easy-Rail Station to drop off cargo and complete the trip. Set up the 15 pieces of durable, Snap-Lock track in so many ways for new adventures. It’s the perfect 1st train set for the 2-year old engineer. And since GeoTrax is a system that all works together – add onto this set for even more fun. With the Fisher-Price GeoTrax Remote Control Timber Railway, kids get to be conductors of their very own train. Completely remote-controlled, the three-car train features auto-aligning wheels that ensure the train stays on the tracks. Children will enjoy piloting the train around the railroad’s many colorful bends, loops and slopes. They can use the working crane to load logs onto the train, or make a quick stop at the Easy Rail Station. Designed for kids ages two to seven, this train set provides hours of imaginative play.

All Aboard! Fun and Easy to Play With
The Timber Railway is painted in vibrant colors and has a cute, cartoonish look that kids will undoubtedly enjoy. The included train (named “Steamer”) comes with three cars: a steam engine, a log cart, and a caboose. When the train’s wheels move, its smokestack moves up and down. The train also comes with a conductor action figure. Both Steamer and the conductor also appear in the included feature DVD, which gives kids a story to work within and deepens their imaginative options.

The railroad adventure begins at the Easy Rail Station by placing the train on the orange portion of the railway where it automatically aligns to the track. In general, the auto-aligning mechanism does well keeping the train on the tracks, but the train will occasionally derail when going down some of the steeper slopes. Kids can pilot the train by using an intuitive remote control, or can opt to move it around by hand. As the train traverses the track, it will make its way up a mountain, circle around loops and drive through a tunnel. There’s also a working crane, where kids can load lumber and other cargo onto the cars.

Build a Railroading Network
The Timbertown Railway features interlocking track pieces that snap together easily. Although it has been built for easy assembly, the track will most likely require some adult assistance during setup. With the help of the included instructions, setup should take approximately 15 minutes. In all, the set requires six “AAA” batteries (not included) — three for the steam engine and three for the remote control.

The Timber Railway has been designed with smaller children in mind, and older kids will quickly get bored with the railway’s compact size and limited activities. However, it is an ideal starter railroad set for younger children, and will provide hours of imaginative play. The set is also compatible with the rest of the GeoTrax set — buy them all to assemble the ultimate railroad play set.

Durable Solid-Wood Construction for Years of Use
With the exception of the durable plastic uprights on the suspension bridge, the plastic wheels and steel rivets on the trains and truck, and the small, steel screws that hold many of the accessories together, the Wooden Railway Set is made entirely of solid wood that will last. Every track piece and accessory is sanded to a smooth finish, and when screws are used, they are set below the surface of the wood, providing a smooth surface for little hands.

The track pieces snap snugly and easily into one another with no excessive force or tools required. With over 100 track pieces and bridge supports to work with, the biggest challenge for your child will be to keep all the pieces organized during their building process.

One piece of advice for parents: add the Melissa & Doug Multi-Activity Table, so your child can easily build out the set and you can keep the pieces contained.

Freight Train, Passenger Train and Flatbed Truck
The Wooden Railway Set includes a six-piece freight train with cargo, a four-piece passenger train, and a three-piece flatbed truck with cargo. The trains and the truck each feature durable plastic wheels held to the bodies with smooth, steel rivets.

The flatbed truck allows your child to replicate the real-world transfer of cargo from the train to the truck, and then on to the neighborhood stores for the final delivery. The set also includes train engineers who can help direct traffic as the trains come in and out of the station.

Several Accessories for Added Fun
To load cargo on and off the trains, the set includes two magnetized crane assemblies — a tower frame and an A-frame — that each feature a lever for raising and lowering the cargo. It also includes a suspension bridge, trestle bridge, a five-way switch, and a roundhouse engine shed where the engines can park when not in use. Several trees and road signs are also included.

Old-Fashioned, Energy-Free Fun
With no electrical parts, flashing lights, or battery-operated motors, the Wooden Railway Set is designed to offer your child imaginative playtime. The tracks and trains are designed to be compatible with most popular wooden tracks, so you may be able mix and match with pieces of other sets you may already have.

With the included easy-to-follow visual instructions, the set can be built out in numerous ways, giving children hours of immersive play time as they build the perfect configuration.

Train Boards and Tables Help Manage Space

My mother said to me many times during my childhood, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” I’d be far better off today if I’d actually learned it. Space is a major factor in model railroading layouts. The issues of space are largely determined by the scale of your trains and its track curves. It seems that more and more adult model railroaders are picking up hollow-core doors at Home Depot and using them as a base for N scale “door layouts”.

When your child graduates from Thomas the Tank Engine, GeoTrax, or Brio push toys, here are some ideas for train boards and train tables that your child can build their toy train layouts on.

Train Boards for Under-the-bed layouts.

For a child’s room, a cost-effective solution is to make a “train board” (not to be confused with the popular online forum TrainBoard.com). A train board slides under the child’s bed.

To make a train board I would use a good quality 1/2 inch plywood, the kind with one side sanded smooth. Using the smooth side for the top, I’d glue a few furniture sliders on the bottom of my train board to protect carpets and hardwood floors. Then I’d glue and nail 1/2 round molding to the sides, primer it, and then paint it green or an earth tone to protect children from splinters and make it easy to clean.

Train Board Sizes

If your child has a twin bed of the type that has the legs under the bed instead of at the corners, then the biggest board you’ll get under there comfortably is about 32 inches wide by 48 inches long.  If the legs of your child’s twin bed are actually corner posts, you could probably make the length 66 inches.

If your child’s has a full bed then a train board up to 48 inches wide by 66 inches long might be possible. Don’t forget, you still need open space beside the bed to slide your train board out, with enough room for the child to kneel beside it.

A Bunk Bed as a Train Table

A more expensive solution would be to buy a bunk bed and putting a plywood table top for your child’s trains over the lower mattress and box spring. Again, I’d paint the plywood a green or an earth tone.

I saw this awesome “twin over full” bed on the web that would really let your child explore some neat layouts. As an unattached American male, I was actually tempted to buy a “full over full” and put a layout on the upper bed frame, but that might look odd to some people.

Door Layouts

If your child’s room is large enough, follow the lead of those adult model railroaders that I mentioned. Pick up an inexpensive hollow-core door and use a couple plastic storage crates to raise it off of the floor. That should make it about the right height for kneeling children.

Not many children I know these days are fortunate enough to have that much space available in their bedrooms. If you have the space to give a door-sized train table, they are indeed fortunate. One way to make space for a door layout would be to make use pulleys to raise it out of the way when it’s not in use.

Overhead Pulleys that Lower Train Tables

Some people mount pulleys on the ceiling of their child’s room. Then they use cords to raise and lower the train table. If the parent has good carpentry skills, this can be an excellent inexpensive solution. If you have to call in a handyman, it won’t come quite so cheap. The beauty of it is, it allows for larger train tables.

There are two things you should definitely do if you build this contraption. First, do not anchor your pulleys into the drywall using plastic anchors and screws. Find beams and drill through them. Then use eyebolts, nuts and lockwashers to mount the pulleys. Second, don’t build layouts and run trains on a board hanging by cords from your ceiling; build folding legs on the bottom of your train table.

If you want to give your child a table where they will spend most of their time learning, studying, and playing then a train table is perfect for you.
The train table is mainly for your child’s toy trains and track, however it can have other purposes as well and because some are quite fancy and colorful, your child will definitely prefer it more tan the conventional table for kids.  s parents you will appreciate it’s various uses as well.
Little kids can play with their wooden toy trains, toy cars, and other action packed figurines on top of their train table. Because their toys are numerous and have small parts, most of these are scattered on the floor which may cause your kids to trip on or worse yet lose in the carpet.  What is worse than a puzzle with 1 missing piece!
With the wooden train table, little toys of your child’s can be placed properly on a hard surface and will not be scattered all over your kitchen or living area.  Allowing your child to have their own little space builds in them confidence and independence which would be of great use as they grow up and prepare for the future.
Another great thing about a train table is that it is built according to the height of your child so they will be able to play at ease. There will be no need for stools where they will be able to stand from for them to navigate and work about.  This is obviously a safer environment for a child to play in.
Some tables include drawings of how a railroad looks on top of the train table. Wooden train tables are made for wooden trains however most of the time, wooden trains are separately sold and are slightly pricey. Because wooden trains are slightly pricey, most adults like collecting train sets, display them and only occasionally play with them.
Encouraging our kids to have a creative time, as in building a town or city on the table, helps grow a child’s motor skills and creative side of their mind. Appropriate toys are key in this developmental stage.
We should not disregard these types of toys as only past times and energy releasers, these toys play a tremendous role in the proper development of our children.
If you wish to research the train tables available, try visiting furniture shops or an outlet store. For fancier wooden train tables that may include full train sets, may be check out your local toy stores for a wide variety of colors and styles.  Whichever you choose make sure your child gets to go and make some of the decisions.  This will enable both of you to have a wonderful experience choosing just the right train table.
